This year has been a serious one for cinema, with Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott starring in All Of Us Strangers, Sophia Coppola’s long-awaited Prescilla finally on the big screen, Saltburn-mania, and Challengers’ racquet sport-romantic drama all leaving us hooked. With that in mind, we thought we’d revisit some of our favourite movie soundtracks, from ’00s Rihanna to ’80s excellence from the Pet Shop Boys. Have a butcher’s at our cinema score standouts below.
Saltburn: Mason vs Princess Superstar, “Perfect (Exceeder)”
It’ll take a lot to get over the chokehold Saltburn had on us this year, and with summer getting closer, its soundtrack is feeling punchier than ever. The Saltburn score is more than music: It’s a lifestyle. And it’s one that we’ll be living all summer 2024.
All of Us Strangers: Pet Shop Boys, “Always On My Mind”
When All of Us Strangers hit cinemas in 2021, we were buzzing to see how Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott cexplored human connection, love, loss and tragedy. In the film Scott’s character Adam revisits a childhood Christmas where Pet Shop Boy’s “Always On My Mind” plays on the radio. The synth-pop banger captured the scene’s emotions perfectly and reminded us just how much of a tune the 1987 single really is.
Challengers: Rihanna, “S&M”
Luca Guadagnino’s turbo-charged tennis drama Challengers has a lot going for it. It’s got athletic love triangles, Zendaya, and a Jonathan Anderson costume design debut. When it was first teased, Rihanna’s “S&M” soundtracked the steamy trailer, and we’ve been hooked ever since.
Queen and Slim: Bilal, “Soul Sista”
Melina Matsoukas’ directional debut, Queen and Slim, is a powerful tale of lovers on the run across America that hits as hard now as it did in 2019. With Matsoukas’ firm footing in the music industry, directing videos for Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, and Jay-Z, it’s no surprise that the score slaps. Bilal’s “Soul Sista” is a soundtrack standout that we can listen to over and over, and you should too.
Back to Black: Amy Winehouse, “Tears Dry on Their Own”
It would be wrong to write about movie music in 2024 and not include this one. Yeah, the Amy Winehouse biopic divided opinion, but the soundtrack is full of Amy Winehouse bops, and picking just one was a bit of an ask. With the Back to Black single “Tears Dry on Their Own” making the cut, this one was a no-brainer.
